Arguably one of the most iconic watches ever made, the Reverso is now approaching its 80th birthday, yet is more popular now than ever. But this is one of the very early pre WWII original models with the rare double signed dial.
Initially designed at the start of the 1930s, when the Swiss businessman César de Trey accepted the challenge of a British Army officer to invent a watch where the glass would be protected during strenuous sports, such as polo. On returning home, he discussed this idea with his friend & business colleague Jacques-David LeCoultre who suggested that the job be given to René-Alfred Chauvot who was really a jewellery designer, based in Paris.
For the first two years of its life, until 1933, the Reverso was made without any seconds hands, then they were fitted with a new movement which Le Coultre had newly developed, the 410 and its sweep second variant, the 411. This is one of the early 410s, numbered 157132, it has 15 jewels, monometallic balance with flat hairspring and is decorated with Geneva stripes.
The watch is very unusual as the case is made from 9ct gold, but was never sold in the UK, as evidenced by the lack of UK hallmarks, showing that it was never imported into the UK by JLC. Unlike the majority of Reversos, it is not engraved on the closed face or on the case back. The case is numbered 3532 on the back of the frame and inside the case back.
The dial is silvered with gilt applied ‘railway track’ surround, applied full ‘Deco’ style Arabic hour markers, sunken subsidiary seconds dial with the gilt sword hands and the slim gilt seconds hand are in excellent condition. It is signed “Le Coultre & Reverso” at the top and the retailer’s name “Favre-Leuba & Co” above the seconds dial. Favre-Leuba were both the agents for and a major retailer of Jaeger Le Coultre in Imperial India, which explains why there are no British import hallmarks.
The case is 95+%, the dial is 95% and the movement is in 95% condition.
It measures 33mm long, 38mm lug to lug, 23mm wide and 8.5mm high it takes a 17 mm strap and is on black crocodile effect strap.
